HELPFUL WEBSITES FOR FEDERAL SENTENCING INFORMATION/MATERIALS

Sentencing Websites

The most comprehensive and insightful website for federal sentencing issues.  The website is run by Professor Douglas Berman of Ohio State University and is frequently cited in appellate court decisions and law review articles.  The site provides information and commentary on virtually every significant sentencing decision in district and appellate courts as well as providing useful links to relevant social science studies, editorials, and law review articles.

The Federal Defender’s website provides a number of articles specifically addressing sentencing issues, including research memos and sample motions that may be useful in preparing sentencing memoranda.

Tenth Circuit Blog provides a synopsis of most important Tenth Circuit decisions.  While the blog does not limit its content to sentencing issues, it includes (and analyzes) virtually every significant Tenth Circuit case with criminal justice implications.

Direct Appeal summaries and links for Tenth Circuit cases.

While each circuit maintains a blog (in theory, anyway) updating the most recent appellate court decisions, the only circuits to routinely update their content are the 2nd, 5th, 9th, and 10th.  The Ninth Circuit provides the most detail and analysis of the decisions.

Circuit 2
Circuit 5
Circuit 9

D- Web Blogs website collects all of the circuit court blogs.  Updated frequently.

Second Circuit Sentencing Blog details the Second Circuit Sentencing Decisions.  Provides good analysis, though it is updated infrequently.

SCOTUS Blog The Supreme Court’s blog, which provides some commentary and links to virtually all the cert. petitions, amicus briefs, merits briefs, and decisions.
